Project
details
Internal
fitting out and external modifications of a new and part existing listed
Grade II structure on two levels to form OUP's only British retail outlet.
The modern air conditioned interior uses purpose made bookshelves, counters
and display units manufactured in beech and laminate. In places these
are set against ancient features uncovered during construction work. Light,
both natural and artificial, plays a large part in the appearance of the
interior, a particular feature being the lightwell which enables the basement
to be connected and lit by the ground floor. High quality finishes, fittings
and workmanship are complemented by a striking design. Modifications to
the shop front were also undertaken to unify the front elevation. The
bookshop was awarded a plaque by the Oxford Preservation Trust.
